TV Children

A lot of children play in TV shows. They work every day, so they cannot go to a usual school. How do they get their schooling?

In Hollywood, where they make many TV shows, about forty teachers give lessons to the children who play in the shows. The teachers’ job is very important because they help the children. They know how many hours a day the child should work and what he or she must learn. The teachers make sure that the children have some free time. TV children get twenty classes each week, from September to June. If they do not work hard, they won’t work in TV shows any more. But TV children are usually good pupils. Sometimes they have classes in very interesting places. Once their classroom was the Mississippi riverboat.

TV children often become famous film stars.

Julia is a year six pupil. She has five or six lessons every day. Julia’s schoolbag is big and heavy. There are books and exercise books in it. She also takes her daybook to school. She never forgets it. Julia often puts an English-Russian dictionary in her bag too because she uses it in her English lessons. Like other pupils Julia has a pencil case with two or three pens, a pencil, a rubber and a pencil sharpener. On Wednesdays Julia puts some paints and brushes in her bag.

Liza is a university student. Her bag is as big as Julia’s. Liza takes a lot of books to the university. She has some paper to write on. In her pencil case Liza has some pencils, pens of different colours and rubbers. She has got two rulers in her bag, too. Liza doesn’t use exercise books, so there are no exercise books in her bag.

It is always difficult for Peter to find his things because he never puts them in the right places. Yesterday morning Peter couldn’t find a lot of his things. After half an hour he found his old trainers on the bookcase. Then he found his new jeans on the bathroom floor. His school books were near the fridge. Peter’s pencil case was in his mother’s black shoe. It was a real shock. Peter’s paint brushes were all in his soup bowl. Just think of it! Peter found his warm boots under the arm chair. When Peter found his exercise books, he saw that there was a box of paints on them. Peter’s daybook was on the chair and his Russian dictionary was on the floor near the window. Poor Peter!

— Sharon!

— Yes?

— I’d like to ask you some questions. May I?

— Oh, yes.

— I think that children in Russia would like to know more about schools in Britain. What school do you go to?

— I go to Kingston Primary. But I am leaving it in June to go to a secondary school.

— Is it your sixth year in primary school?

— Yes, it is. I like my school. I know I’ll miss some of my friends and my teachers.

— How many days a week do you go to school?

— Five. We don’t have classes at weekends.

— I see. And when do your classes begin?

— We must be at school at 8.50. The school is over at two or three o’clock.

— Do you have to wear a uniform?

— Yes, we do. Ours is a dark blue skirt, a blue blouse and a grey jacket. We wear black shoes, too.

— What do you usually do after classes?

— My friend Anna and I play grass hockey for the school. Two times a week we play in the gym or near the school.

— Very interesting. And what else do you do?

— Sometimes I help my mother to do the shopping or meet my friends. We like listening to music and roller-skating.

Nina is seven. Every morning her mother takes her to primary school not far from their house. Nina has a good time there and learns a lot of interesting things. They learn reading, writing, and counting. Pupils have a lot of physical activities: physical education, music, games. They have a swimming lesson every week. Nina’s brother Boris is already 11. He goes to secondary school. He is in the 5th year and does many subjects. In his school different teachers teach different subjects. Besides mathematics and literature they have lessons of history, biology and a foreign language. Boris is doing French. But most of all he likes physical education lessons. They learn to play volleyball and basketball.

Mike is Boris’s friend. He goes to the same school but he is in the 7th year. He does a lot of subjects. He likes his geography lessons very much because he wants to travel. He also does physics and chemistry and he is very good at them. They learn to swim and to ski in their PE lessons. In autumn and spring they go to the swimming pool. And in winter they go to the park to ski.

Dialogue 1

Pauline: Hi, Mike. I’m glad to see you. How are you?

Mike: I’m fine, and how are you, Pauline?

Pauline: I’m fine too, thanks. How do you like your new school?

Mike: Very much. We have some subjects in English: English history, English geography. I’m thankful to our English teacher because she prepared me for this school. I can speak to foreigners and read English books, too. I love English.

Pauline: And I like my old school. We have a new computer studies teacher. Thanks to him I am good at working on my computer and can use the Internet. Now I like this subject best of all.

Dialogue 2

Denis: Ann, you are at college now, do you like it?

Ann: Oh, yes. You know, I like physics and maths very much. At school I had a very good physics teacher. Her lessons were very interesting. That is why I find college quite easy. And how is your new school, Denis? Do you like it?

Denis: I do. You know how much I like sport. I am dreaming to be a high-class football player. In my old school sports lessons were not very important but now we have a very good PE teacher. I play for the school football team. I think we will be champions this season.

Step 9

This is an e-mail letter from Ann Doolittle, an English girl, to her Russian pen friends.

Dear friends,

I am writing to you from England. My name is Ann Doolittle and I am thirteen years old. My family lives in the centre of London. I have two brothers and a sister. We all go to a state secondary school near Regent’s Park.

Our school is rather old, with interesting traditions. There are a lot of pupils in it. I do eleven subjects: English, mathematics, two foreign languages: French and German, science, art and some more. We get religious education too. We go to school five days a week. On Saturday and Sunday we are free. We have four lessons in the morning and two more lessons after our lunch break. Classes are over at four. I take a bus and go home.

We must wear a uniform to school. The uniform is a dark skirt, a grey jacket, a white blouse and a red tie. I like my uniform very much.

My hobbies are swimming and travelling. I’d like to visit Moscow one day and meet Russian boys and girls.

With best wishes,

Ann Doolittle

Step 10

Аудиозапись № 18 к заданию 1

Ann: You know Tom, I’m not sure that school is the best place for education.

Tom: Not sure? Why? It is a traditional place where children do different subjects.

Ann: You are right, it is. But don’t you think that parents know their child much better and can have their own programmes to teach their son or daughter.

Tom: I don’t think it is always so. Parents are different. Not all of them can teach their children about the world and about the people.

Ann: It’s true. But schools start at about 8 o’clock in the morning. If your family lives far from the school, a child has to get up very early to be on time for his or her classes. At home children sleep longer hours. They have a lot of fun and enjoy their classes.

Tom: I know that in America quite a lot of children have classes at home but I don’t think that schooling at home is a good idea. At school children meet a lot of new people, make friends with them, learn to work together. They have time to do the sport, too.

Ann: I think you are right, Tom. I’ll send my children to school.
